Chaitali Somadder

A Bangladeshi filmmaker born in 1984 in Rangamati. She is the daughter of Shambhu Nath Somadder and Doli Rani Shymli. She has completed her honors (2007) and masters (2008) from the College of Home Economics under the University of Dhaka, in ‘Related Art’. In 2014 she has done Graduation (18-day film workshop) as an Editor from the AFA (Asian Film Academy), Busan, South Korea. She has also accomplished her 3-year Post-Graduation Diploma (major in editing) (2011-2014) from Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata, India.

She has been related to filmmaking (especially in editing) since 2009. Worked at Desh TV (2011) as a News Video Editor. Worked also as a Video Editor in BBC Media Action (2015-2016). Edited several short films which have been screened and awarded in acclaimed international film festivals. She has been editing both fiction and documentary films of various lengths on a regular basis.

In 2014, she directed a 5-minute short film named ‘Patience’ that got featured in two international one-take film festivals in London and Croatia. Later in 2019, she co-directed a 24-minute short film titled ‘SeeYou’. In 2021, she has worked as a director in a short film named ‘Magphirat’ for ‘Projonmo Wave’ as funded by the U.S. Embassy. In 2023, ‘Projonmo Wave’ is hosting 2 more short films made by her. One is ‘Mukti’ that is already on air, while the other one named ‘Ekdin Viral Namita Paul’ is currently at the post-production stage. She also won the Government grant for yet another 30-minute short film named ‘Mariyam’, which is expected to be released soon.

Besides, Chaitali is also an Affiliate Lecturer in both Bangladesh Cinema & Television Institute and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute (DU-affiliated) in Dhaka, for a couple of years
